About this fund
The Summer Fund is a non-repayable grant awarded to students who are in financial difficulty and need extra support with living costs over the long summer vacation.
You can still apply for this fund if you have already received the Student Support Fund during the academic year.
How are applications assessed?
Applications are assessed based on individual need and personal financial circumstances and considered on a case by case basis. However, as resources are limited, priority will be given to students who fulfil certain criteria listed under ‘Who is eligible’. Evidence will be required to support your application.
Who is eligible
You are eligible to apply for the Summer Fund if you are a full-time, continuing, undergraduate student fully enrolled on a standard length course (ie courses which have less than 45 weeks academic term time) and in financially difficulty. Priority will be given to students who can demonstrate any of the following circumstances:
- You have caring responsibilities - for a child, relative, partner or other adult
- You have health issues or are a disabled student
- You have no family contact
- You are unable to return to the family home for the holiday period
- You have not been able to secure work due to placement or study commitments
- You have overlapping tenancies or have to pay double rent for any period over the summer.
If you do not fulfil any of these criteria, you may still apply so please tell us as much as you can in your cover letter.
Health science students including apprentices (both February and September cohorts) enrolled on long courses more than 45 weeks in duration are not eligible for the Summer Fund, but may still be able to apply to the Student Support Fund until Friday 30 June if they have not already submitted an application this academic year.
Please contact funds@brighton.ac.uk for more information and please provide your student number.
How to apply
There is a short application form to complete and you need to provide supporting evidence such as bank statements, rent or mortgage liability, DWP benefits and a covering letter fully explaining your reasons for applying.
Please download the application pack and once you have completed the form and gathered the required evidence, you can email your completed form and scanned evidence back to the Funds team direct: funds@brighton.ac.uk.
The fund opens on 12 June and you need to submit your application and all supporting evidence before midnight on 7 July but we do ask you to submit the form in plenty of time.
We will contact you by email, using your university account and we will respond within 14 days of receipt of your application.
All awards will be made before the end of July.
