Research in Advanced Professional Practice (60 credits)

This 60 credit module offers experienced practitioners the opportunity to carry out an in-depth inquiry into an area of advanced social work practice, or practice related to social work.  Key learning focusses on the development of knowledge and skills required for planning and executing a small-scale, qualitative research project.  

Topics included in teaching consider areas like the synthesis and integration of knowledge relating to practice; the theory and principles of research; competence in the design, planning and execution of a viable, ethical and realistic research project.

At the end of the module learners will produce a 12,000 word research paper, in which they demonstrate their ability to carry out research independently and to evaluate research in order to inform practice.

Independent Learning for Advanced Practice in Mental Health or Social Care (40 credits)

This module is designed for senior practitioners working in the field of mental health or social care, who have had significant practice experience in relation to making decisions in demanding, complex and challenging situations.  

The module aims to support students in developing evidence-informed practice, by identifying and critically evaluating research relevant to their area of practice.  

Topics included in teaching include navigating professional responsibilities, promoting ethical practice and critical reflection. 

At the end of the module learners will produce a 5,000-word article, suitable for publication, exploring the research and knowledge base of a practice issue.

Independent Learning for Advanced Practice in Mental Health or Social Care (20 credits)

This 20 credit module is a shorter, more contained, unit of study that shares the same principles as its larger, 40 credit, counterpart. 

At the end of the module learners will produce a 3000-word article, as for publication, exploring the research and knowledge base of a practice issue.
