About the department
The People Department is responsible for shaping and enabling sustainable people solutions. We develop policies, procedures and guidance on all aspects of people management to enable and equip our leaders.
The People Department consists of five key teams:
- People Operations
- People Partnering
- Organisational Change
- Leadership and Organisational Development
- Equality and Diversity.
Departmental Management Team
The Chief People Officer is a member of the university’s executive board alongside a number of university committees. The Chief People Officer leads the overall strategy of the department including equality, diversity and inclusion. She is supported by the Deputy Director of People, who deputises for her and drives forward the people priorities for the department. The Deputy Director of People is in turn supported by the senior managers leading our key areas of People Operations, People Partnering, Organisational Change and Leadership and Organisational Development.
People Operations
This area is led by the People Manager (Operations). People Operations consists of three smaller teams which work closely together to support managers and staff in a full range of their day to day activities. These teams are as follows: Recruitment and Orientation, People Support as well as the People Data and Systems team.
People Partnering
This area is responsible for:
- pay and reward
- union relationship management
- formal negotiating and consultation frameworks
- terms and conditions of service
- employment legislation impact assessment
- policy development and review
- people management advice and guidance
- formal casework management.
Organisational Change
The Organisational Change team works with leaders and teams to guide them through the process of change, ensuring good practice and reducing risks associated with the change process. Organisational change refers to any modifications made to the university’s structure, culture, processes and strategies.
Leadership and Organisational Development
The Leadership and Organisational Development team manage the ongoing development and provision of university-wide leadership and management development activity, including staff induction and professional services events. They have oversight of the staff development review scheme (SDR), employee voice, staff engagement surveys, financial support for studying policy, staff benefits and recognition programmes such as the One Brighton Awards.
Equality and Diversity
The Equality and Diversity team are responsible for institutional equality, diversity and inclusion strategies and policies, project managing work on equality charters and benchmarks, supporting the staff equality networks, and running staff training, events and other awareness and engagement activities on equality, diversity and inclusion.
