Researcher Dr Annie Ockelford from the Aquatic Research Centre participated in running an award-winning stand at the New Forest and Hampshire County Show in July. The stand was co-organised between the Forestry Commission, the Universities of Southampton, Hull and Brighton and the British Society for Geomorphology.
The team was there to help the Forestry Commission promote public understanding of the High Level Stewardship (HLS) programmes. These programmes seek to restore some of the New Forest’s rivers back to a natural, meandering state to improve the health and biodiversity within the river environment. Visitors to the stand got hands on with a scaled down ‘River in a Box’ – a sandbox where the shape of the river can be controlled and manipulated to demonstrate different scenarios.
