Born in Ghana, Cllr Baah is the first ethnic minority person to be elected Mayor in Lewes since the Borough Council (the Town Council’s predecessor) was incorporated in 1881.
Cllr Baah told the council they had made history and that she felt honoured and grateful to live in a town where she was respected.
Cllr Baah came to Britain in 2001 and graduated from the University with a Masters in Public Administration in 2013. She said: “I was fortunate to have Mary Darking as Senior Lecturer (School of Applied Social Science), who nurtured and supported me in my studies. She's such a phenomenal lady.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the University of Brighton! The lecturers were dedicated and friendly. I'm so grateful for the great experience.”
Cllr Baah will formally became Mayor at a full council meeting on 17 May.
