eduroam

The wifi service for students, staff and visitors from other educational institutions at the University of Brighton is eduroam. It provides secure high speed connectivity from all university buildings. 

Connecting to eduroam

• Select eduroam from the list of available networks on your device and then enter your eduroam username (in the form username@brighton.ac.uk - e.g. abc123@brighton.ac.uk) and enter your normal university password.
• You should be asked to trust or accept our security certificate, which should be named “authenticate.brighton.ac.uk” anything else is not valid. If this is correct, then click continue/connect/trust/accept.
• TIP: You can use the eduroam CAT website to get your device ready for eduroam before you arrive on campus. 

Problems?

• Detailed troubleshooting information is available (logged in users only). 
• eduroam is supported by the university's IT Service Desk (01273 644444 or servicedesk@brighton.ac.uk).
• Visitors from other institutions should seek guidance from their home institutions if they are unable to log in.

If you use eduroam you are agreeing to the conditions of use of eduroam UK and the university Information Systems regulations.

UoB Visitor Wi-Fi

This is provided for guests and visitors from organisations that are not connected to eduroam. It offers limited, free connectivity provided by BT and support is provided by BT directly, rather than the university.

Using UoB Visitor Wi-Fi

• Connect to UoB Visitor Wi-Fi from the available networks on your device.
• Open your internet browser or click the pop up asking you to sign in, a welcome page will appear. You will not be asked for a username or password.
• If this is your first time using the service, make sure you agree with the terms of service linked from that page.
• Click the “Go Online” button and you will then see a page confirming you are connected.
• The system will automatically re-connect your device for the next 24 hours after which you will see the welcome page again.
• If you have any queries, or experience any issues, call free on 0800 022 3322 for assistance.

Halls IoT

This service is available only in university-owned halls of residence and is for TVs, smart speakers, games consoles and other wifi enabled devices that are not able to use eduroam. Devices must be registered via the portal at iot.brighton.ac.uk which is only available from within the university.

Instructions on how to use this service are available to logged in users and use of the service is subject to the university Information Systems regulations.

Membership

Library membership is required to visit and have access to University of Brighton Libraries. If you wish to use our libraries as:

• a member of the public
• a student or staff member at another institution
• a University of Brighton graduate or former staff member
• a 16-19 year old studying in further education

Exceptions to the requirement to join as an external member

• Designated carers who have been identified as part of a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) for a member of staff, student or external member of University of Brighton libraries.
• Under 18 year olds visiting during library help desk opening hours supervised by a parent or guardian who is a member of University of Brighton staff or a University of Brighton student with a valid Unicard.

Students and staff from other institutions

Staff and students from other universities may be able to join for free via the SCONUL Access scheme. Please submit an application for SCONUL Access via this link before filling in the membership form below. For your application to be accepted you will need to supply a copy of your SCONUL Access acceptance email. After you have submitted your application you will be contacted with details of how to do this.

Students on Access to Higher Education courses at colleges in the LASER Learning Awards Access Validating Agency are entitled to free membership for the duration of their course. After submitting your application you will be asked to present proof of your student status when collecting your membership card.

Membership entitles you to borrow six books, for three weeks at a time from any University of Brighton Library. Loans will be automatically renewed if not required by another borrower. Due to licensing restrictions, online resources are not accessible to external library members. Libraries and non-bookable library study spaces can be accessed during Help Desk open hours. You will need to show your University of Brighton Libraries membership card to access library buildings.

University of Brighton graduates and former staff members

University of Brighton graduates and former staff members are entitled to free library access, renewable annually.

Membership entitles you to borrow six books, for three weeks at a time from any University of Brighton Library. Loans will be automatically renewed if not required by another borrower. Due to licensing restrictions, online resources are not accessible to external library members. Libraries and non-bookable library study spaces can be accessed during Help Desk open hours. You will need to show your University of Brighton Libraries membership card to access library buildings.

16-19 year olds in further education

16-19 year olds in further education are eligible for free annual membership to access libraries and non-bookable library study spaces during Help Desk open hours. You may continue to renew your membership annually as long as you continue to be eligible as a 16-19 year old student in further education.

You will be required to supply contact details for a member of staff at your school or college to authorise your application. Please ensure you gain their permission before giving their details on this form. For home schooled students this should be a parent or guardian.

This category of membership does not allow borrowing, but books can be used within libraries for reference purposes. You will need to show your University of Brighton Libraries membership card along with your school or college ID to access libraries.

Public membership including visitor access

If you do not qualify for any of our free membership categories, the annual membership fee is £20 and membership is for over 18s only. After you have submitted your application you will be contacted with details of how pay the fee via the University online shop. We are unable to take any cash payments.
