Membership
Library membership is required to visit and have access to University of Brighton Libraries. If you wish to use our libraries as:
- a member of the public
- a student or staff member at another institution
- a University of Brighton graduate or former staff member
- a 16-19 year old studying in further education

Exceptions to the requirement to join as an external member
- Designated carers who have been identified as part of a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) for a member of staff, student or external member of University of Brighton libraries.
- Under 18 year olds visiting during library help desk opening hours supervised by a parent or guardian who is a member of University of Brighton staff or a University of Brighton student with a valid Unicard.
Students and staff from other institutions
Staff and students from other universities may be able to join for free via the SCONUL Access scheme. Please submit an application for SCONUL Access via this link before filling in the membership form below. For your application to be accepted you will need to supply a copy of your SCONUL Access acceptance email. After you have submitted your application you will be contacted with details of how to do this.
Students on Access to Higher Education courses at colleges in the LASER Learning Awards Access Validating Agency are entitled to free membership for the duration of their course. After submitting your application you will be asked to present proof of your student status when collecting your membership card.
Membership entitles you to borrow six books, for three weeks at a time from any University of Brighton Library.* Loans will be automatically renewed if not required by another borrower. Due to licensing restrictions, online resources are not accessible to external library members. Libraries and non-bookable library study spaces can be accessed during Help Desk open hours. You will need to show your University of Brighton Libraries membership card to access library buildings.
*with the exception of SCONUL Band R membership, which is reference only and does not allow borrowing

University of Brighton graduates and former staff members
University of Brighton graduates and former staff members are entitled to free library access, renewable annually.

Apply for graduate or former staff membership
16-19 year olds in further education
16-19 year olds in further education are eligible for free annual membership to access libraries and non-bookable library study spaces during Help Desk open hours. You may continue to renew your membership annually as long as you continue to be eligible as a 16-19 year old student in further education.
You will be required to supply contact details for a member of staff at your school or college to authorise your application. Please ensure you gain their permission before giving their details on this form. For home schooled students this should be a parent or guardian.
This category of membership does not allow borrowing, but books can be used within libraries for reference purposes. You will need to show your University of Brighton Libraries membership card along with your school or college ID to access libraries.

Public membership including visitor access
If you do not qualify for any of our free membership categories, the annual membership fee is £20 and membership is for over 18s only. After you have submitted your application you will be contacted with details of how pay the fee via the university online shop. We are unable to take any cash payments.
