About this bursary
This bursary is for full-time undergraduate students resident in England who have been in local authority care and start their course in 2016. This bursary is available in the second and subsequent years of full-time undergraduate study. It is worth £1,000 a year and is funded by the university. You do not need to repay a University of Brighton bursary.

Depending on your circumstances, you could be eligible to receive further bursaries and financial support from the University of Brighton. If you are in hardship you can apply for additional help from the Student Support Fund in every year of your course.
Who is eligible
You are eligible for a care leaver's bursary if you:
- are under the age of 25 and have been cared for by a local authority for at least 13 weeks since the age of 14
- are studying on a full-time undergraduate course (registered to study 120 credits)
- are normally resident in England and have been assessed as eligible to receive full funding from Student Finance England
- have an annual household income of up to and including £25,000.
Your eligibility for this bursary will be re-assessed each academic year.
Exceptions
Some nursing, midwifery and allied health professions (AHP) courses have different tuition fee and funding arrangements. Students on these courses do not qualify for the University of Brighton Care Leavers or Compact Plus bursaries.
Some social work students are eligible to receive NHS bursaries in years 2 and 3 of their courses. Social work students who receive NHS bursaries are not eligible for University of Brighton Care Leavers or Compact Plus bursaries.
How to apply
When you complete your UCAS application form, make sure you that you indicate that you have been in local authority care.
Once you have been offered a place at the University of Brighton, we will send you an eligibility questionnaire to complete. The information you provide us is treated in confidence.
We will email you by the end of November to confirm whether you will receive this bursary for the academic year.
