The season ‘grounded’ showcases the work of artists predominantly based in the south-east of England and proposes a way of thinking about movement as a political act.
The season runs from 28 July until 9 August and features five online screenings hosted by Coastal Currents, Hastings UK as part of its annual arts programming. Grounded is curated by Dr Claudia Kappenberg, Principal Lecturer in the university’s School of Media, and Fiontán Moran, Assistant Curator at Tate Modern.
Dr Kappenberg said: “Set against the backdrop of COVID-19, grounded considers the variety of ways artists use movement in video and film to explore the relationship of the body to society, of confinement to imagination, and health to politics.
“It echoes the approach of those working in grounded theory who gather materials together to understand the social conventions that affect how people act and relate to each other.
“The University of Brighton is providing financial assistance for grounded and is taking an active role in supporting the arts in the region during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
