Dr Turner is senior lecturer on the Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy course in the School of Applied Social Science, as well as a working psychotherapist, and his book - entitled Intersections of Privilege and Otherness in Counselling and Psychotherapy – addresses vital but often absent discussions in the professional response to mental health and well-being problems.
Dr Turner said: “The political movements of the right have worked hard to maintain privilege, thereby enforcing a reaction against those seen as 'the other' - be they women, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ groups, the disabled, or those who feel disenfranchised by the societies they wish to belong to.
“Although the world of psychotherapy often acknowledges the politically correct narrative of respecting difference, there has always been a marked lack of texts actually exploring the unconscious power dynamics held within any of these intersecting identities - and how we all hold aspects of privileges and otherness.
