Professor Tara Dean, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) at the University of Brighton, has been appointed by Advance HE to chair one of the UK panels implementing the Athena SWAN Charter – which is designed to promote gender equality in representation and progression of both staff and students within higher education and research.
Advance HE members can apply for institutional and departmental Athena SWAN awards that recognise their specific gender equality efforts, and the University of Brighton has held an institutional Athena SWAN Bronze Award since 2013, and in 2016 it secured its award under the expanded charter.
As Chair of the Athena SWAN Steering Group and the University of Brighton’s Gender Equality Champion, Professor Dean has overseen the strategic plans that have secured awards for the majority of schools at the university.
Professor Dean said: “I am delighted to have been selected to chair an Athena SWAN review panel. At the University of Brighton, we have experienced the impact that Athena SWAN can have as a catalyst for positive change and we continue to enhance our policies and practices to promote a culture of equality and inclusion.
I look forward to working with Advance HE and other representatives from the sector to help institutions to accelerate women’s advancement, create supportive and inclusive environments, and embed gender equality into working practices to ensure that all staff and students achieve their full potential.”
