Statistical science has underpinned quantitative medical and healthcare research endeavour for over a century. Anyone conducting such research either needs to be statistically competent or to call upon the expertise of a statistician. From shaping study design to meticulously analysing data and interpreting results, statisticians guide other researchers to avoid common pitfalls and to provide robust conclusions for dissemination. With an ever-expanding volume of available medical and healthcare data, alongside developments in methodology and computing power, research opportunities are endless. However, investigations must be carefully planned to avoid fishing for chance findings, dredging the data and veering off-course from the stated research aims. In his lecture, Professor Bremner will describe examples from clinical trials and observational research studies, explaining the importance of sticking to the plan, ensuring safe passage and arrival at port.
