Overview
All eligible new students who are not living in halls can get help with their travel costs. You could receive between £200–£500, depending on where you live and your household income. You are free to fund your preferred form of transport, but the best way to make our support go further is by combining it with student discounts offered by the Unizone train ticket, TFL 18+ Student Oyster scheme and local bus companies.
How it works
Eligible students who are starting full-time undergraduate courses in 2024, who are not living in halls, and who are travelling from their term-time address each day to study are eligible for at least £200 to help them meet those travel costs.
Further support up to a total value of £500 is available depending on where you are travelling from and your household income.
You should apply for your Travel Boost after you have enrolled online from 19 August onwards.
Who is eligible
- New full-time UK University of Brighton undergraduate students who are starting courses in 2024, who are not living in halls and who are travelling from their term-time address each day to study are eligible for at least £200 to help them meet travel costs.
- Additional support to a total value of £500 is available depending on where you are travelling from and your household income.
- Students who are eligible for the full Student Finance England student loan for maintenance costs or whose home addresses are in neighbourhoods in England where historically not many people go to university are eligible for support with travel at a higher rate. You can check whether you live in an eligible POLAR 4 Quintile 1 or Quintile 2 postcode by using the Office for Students postcode checker.
Exception: Students starting healthcare courses
Students starting healthcare courses who are eligible for NHS Learning Support funding and NHS help with placement travel costs are not eligible for Brighton Boost support with travel costs.
Students on postgraduate pre-registration healthcare and PGCE courses
Students starting postgraduate pre-registration healthcare courses and PGCE courses are eligible for the undergraduate student loan package for Student Finance England. However, as postgraduate students they are not eligible for financial support from the Brighton Boost. Students on these courses may be eligible for a range of additional support from NHS England and the Department of Education.
What is covered

We will confirm your eligibility after you enrol, from 19 August onwards.

Living in halls
Can I get help if I live in halls? Generally speaking, no. Our support for travel costs is for eligible students travelling from their term-time address to university each day.
You may be eligible for help with your halls costs though. Our halls are either on or very close to our campuses in Brighton. They all have excellent public transport links and depending on your circumstances you could be eligible for a campus parking e-permit.
