Their responsibilities can vary, so they could work in marketing, analytics, facility or event management, athlete representation, sport media and more.

A-levels or BTEC
Entry requirements are in the range of A-level BBB–BCC (120–104 UCAS Tariff points), or BTEC Extended Diploma DDM–DMM. Our conditional offers typically fall within this range.

International Baccalaureate
 30 points, including three subjects at Higher level.

Access to HE Diploma
Pass with 60 credits overall. At least 45 credits at level 3, with 24 credits at distinction and 21 credits at merit or above.

T-level
Merit in the Health, Healthcare Science or Science T-level. Other T-levels are not accepted.

English language requirements

Course structure

You will experience a dynamic blend of academic study, practical application, research and hands-on experience. This balance of knowledge and practical skills is designed to prepare you for career success in this fast-paced and growing industry.

In your first year, you will be introduced to the components of sport business management and the impacts of sports policy, finance and economics on effective sport management.

In your second year, you will develop project management skills and analyse the role of management for the successful organisation of sport.

In the final year, you will investigate the roles of marketing and strategy in sport business management and undertake an extended piece of research.

Year 1

In year 1 you will be responsible for organising the promotion and running of a sports event. This will develop your commercial awareness and business skills.

Modules

  • Who Runs Sport?

    Understanding why sport is structured and organised in the way it is, has become the most important factor for anyone thinking of developing a career in sport. This module will introduce you to issues of governance, government, policy initiatives, funding and media coverage. Content includes a view of the relationships between sport and sports coaching, sport and health/physical activity, sport and physical education, the sources of funding for sport and why sport is such 'big business'.

  • Introduction to Sport Management

    This module will introduce you to the underlying principles, theoretical concepts and practical issues associated with managing the business of sport. You will explore business structures, ownership, external environment and commercial characteristics of sport business.

  • Preparing for the World of Sport

    This module will support you in the transition to academic study at university. You will be encouraged to take responsibility for, and reflect upon your own learning, development and employability. You will be given support to develop the skills needed to produce high quality academic work. This module will also introduce you to research skills and practices used to investigate sport as well as raising awareness of careers information and services.

  • Understanding Sport Media

    This module introduces sport media and the academic field of media studies. You'll explore the relationships that sport organisations, athletes and fans/spectators have with media formats. You'll develop knowledge of the sport-media relationship by considering classic and current academic studies and have the opportunity to analyse and interpret contemporary sport media content.

  • Finance and Economics for Sport Management

    This module focuses on economic and financial knowledge, on the business environment and on the theory and practice of financial management in sport business organisations. You will be introduced to basic economic and financial concepts that underpin the analysis and interpretation of the business environment, the construction and presentation of key financial and economic data, and how to analysis and use such data in the management of sport business organisations.

  • Sport Events

    Consumers as a consequence of the continued commercialisation of sport, have ever-increasing expectations. This has resulted in intense competition for attendance, spectators and membership. Sport business managers must understand the needs of their consumers and provide commercially viable high levels of customer satisfaction. This module will provide you with an understanding of the theories of service delivery, quality revenue and expenditure management. You will translate this knowledge into practice through organising and running a sport event.

Meet the team

Dr Alex Channon, course leader

Dr Alex Channon holds a PhD in the Sociology of Sport from Loughborough University. He has worked in academia since 2008, holding posts at Loughborough University, the University of Greenwich and Syracuse University in London, before joining the University of Brighton in 2015.

Alex teaches on a range of programmes and is the course leader for the Sport Management degree course. His teaching responsibilities focus on sociological issues as they pertain to a variety of sport and physical activity contexts. He also teaches research methods and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate research.

Alex’s own research largely focuses on exploring various socio-cultural aspects of martial arts and combat sports. He has published numerous academic articles on this work, which covers theoretical issues including gender, media, violence, risk taking, education, and medical support. He is also the editor of three academic books, concerning combat sports, sport and gender, and teaching methods in higher education respectively.

Placements

During the second year of your degree, you will undertake an extended work placement during the second semester. This will involve spending a minimum of 300 hours working in a sport-related organisation, gaining valuable first-hand experience of the sport and physical activity sector.

You will be supported in sourcing a placement from our extensive list of approved placement providers, or you can work with tutors to develop a placement of your own. Examples of placements our students have undertaken in recent years can be found in the careers section.

Before going on placement, you will undertake a short but intensive series of preparatory workshops at university. Once on placement you will have a designated supervisor from the course team, as well as a mentor within the organisation you are placed in.

Our placement programme has been cited as an example of best practice in both national-level and European-wide sport management teaching evaluations. It is a core component of your journey towards developing both academic and professional graduate skills.

My placement host was the Sussex County FA and the purpose of their job is to ensure that they provide equal opportunities in football for everyone. My overall skillset improved whilst working on placement as I had to improve my confidence and customer service skills to provide the best outcome for the organisation. The placement was important to me as this employment area is something that I am thinking of going in to when I finish university.

The placement element of the degree is outlined in the course content section.

You will be able to use your time on placement to not only develop key skills vital for your career, but also enhance your CV and begin to make a variety of industry contacts. Many of our students have gone on to secure further work with their placement providers after graduating.

Course fees

UK (full-time) 9,250 GBP

International (full-time) 15,900 GBP

The fees listed here are for the first year of full-time study if you start your course in the academic year 2024–25.

You will pay fees for each year of your course. Some fees may increase each year.

UK undergraduate and some postgraduate fees are regulated by the UK government and increases will not be more than the maximum amount allowed. Course fees that are not regulated may increase each year by up to 5% or RPI (whichever is higher).

If you are studying part-time your fee will usually be calculated based on the number of modules that you take.

What's included in your tuition fee

  • In sport courses, UK-based field trips are available in some option modules in the final year. You do not have to take these option modules to complete the degree programme. Where a field trip takes place, costs are covered but you are expected to make a contribution towards food. Typically this is £50.
  • For courses with healthcare-based placement settings, DBS checks and occupational health checks, where required, are included in the fees.
  • Course books, magazines and journals are available in the university libraries. You do not need to have your own copies. See the subject area in the library for an up-to-date list of key subject journals and databases.
  • You will have access to computers and necessary software on campus – and can borrow a laptop from us if yours is broken or you don’t have a computer at home. Specialist equipment is provided to cover essential learning.

Additional course costs

  • For sports courses which require a placement, you’ll be expected to pay for your living costs and travel. Physical Education (QTS teacher training) students can claim travel costs to their school placement.
  • You’ll need to budget for printing and stationery for personal study, and books if you decide to buy your own.   
  • In most cases coursework submissions are electronic but you may wish to print notes which would involve an extra cost.   
  • Many students choose to buy their own hardware, software and accessories. The amount spent will depend on your individual choices, but this expenditure is not essential to pass any of our courses.

Falmer campus

Set in the South Downs, our Falmer campus is around four miles from Brighton city centre. Students based here study a range of subjects including education studies, teaching, sport and exercise, nursing and midwifery, allied health professions and medicine. Brighton and Hove Albion's Amex stadium and beautiful Stanmer Park are right next door.

Falmer campus has two halls of residence on site, as well as a library, restaurant, cafes and the students' union shop and bar.

The campus has extensive sport and leisure facilities including a fitness suite, swimming pool, outdoor grass football and rugby pitches, sports hall, tennis and badminton courts, and dance and spin studios.

Specialist learning facilities at Falmer include the curriculum centre used by teaching and education students, which houses over 30,000 teaching resources, clinical skills and simulation suites used by health students, and labs and a strength and conditioning suite used by sport students. We’ve recently redeveloped the Falmer campus - learn more about the many facilities our students have access to.

Cycle lanes link Falmer with our other campuses and the city centre. There are regular bus services to the city centre and other campuses. Falmer train station is right next to campus and a nine-minute journey to central Brighton.

    • Paddock Field and Great Wilkins halls offer a range of rooms on our Falmer campus, minutes from your classes, and on the edge of the South Downs.
    • Varley Park is a popular dedicated halls site, offering a mix of rooms and bathroom options at different prices. It is around two miles from Falmer campus and four miles from the city centre, and is easy to get to by bus.

“I am currently working at football agency called TI Sports cooperation in Korea. TI Sports is a professional football agency providing sportsperson representation for footballers. "My experience on this course challenged and motivated me to find my passion, interest and niche within the sports industry. It also allowed me to develop as a person, personally and professionally, mostly because of the support from my course tutors.

"A highlight of my Sport Management degree would be my placement with Active Surrey. This opportunity enabled me to work as a project coordinator for various teams across the Active Partnership. I applied my knowledge learnt from a first year module that overviews the sports industry, its sectors and their strategies, and took this forward to a placement organisation that is key for delivering national level strategic objectives for local need.

"During my degree, I utilised what was offered to me, including working with the Students' Union to set up the University’s first Women in Business society. My tutors congratulated me on this accomplishment and guided me to further my interest in female empowerment and apply it to my sports business assignments, including my final year dissertation.

"In the process of writing the dissertation, I was very aware of time management and I prioritised feedback from my tutors who were always there with support when I needed it. I was very pleased to receive a first class grade (84%) for this work too.

"Since completing my degree, I’ve also graduated from Brighton with a Masters degree in Social Research Methods. When I finished my masters however, I was mostly discussing the experiences from my bachelors course to potential employers as I wanted and continue to pursue work in sports management. Because of this degree course, I found my niche which is to work in one way or another to further the women’s global sporting movement.

"I am currently interning at the world’s leading sports and entertainment agency, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), in their Sports Talent team. I’ve learnt lots about commercial sports partnerships with exclusive athletes, particularly with female footballers. I can only assume that I secured this opportunity because of the successful, engaging and practical degree experience I had at Brighton."

“For my placement I worked at Football 4 Peace International (F4P), which is an activity-based community relations and reconciliation initiative that brings people together through a variety of sports. 

“I was tasked with several projects ranging from organising different events such as the Easter Challenge Camp and the F4P v Homophobia event in partnership with Sussex Downs College (now East Sussex College Group), to coordinating with F4P coaches to work on projects and creating a new coaching kit for the F4P staff. 

“I was given the opportunity to go to Berlin to meet with key sport academics at the Humboldt University as well as attending The Commonwealth Secretariat celebration of the second International Day of Sport for Development and Peace. Luckily I was also able to take part in the F4P project in The Gambia and the project in The Republic of Korea. 

“Throughout my placement I gained wider knowledge and experience in the world of sport for development and peace, which enabled me to understand how the business and management elements of a charity organisation work. This then improved and developed many transferable skills that will be crucial in the future. 

“Through the opportunities given to me during my placement, I was able to increase my skills that relate to the sport industry. Whether through managing different teams for different events, coordinating with sport retail companies to reach an agreement on kit packages or organising an event, the transferable skills gained will help me immensely in the future.”

"I studied Sport Management at the University of Brighton from 2018-2021.

"I enjoyed my experience at the university both socially and academically. The course was very insightful and provided me with lifelong knowledge within the sports industry. I was able to take what I had learnt throughout the course and apply it to working in the world of sports development.

"The lecturers on this course also add significant value. They were always on hand to support me throughout the course. They have also been very helpful after the course  finished to continue to share their expertise and support with jobs and professional development. 

"The degree is endorsed by CIMSPA which allowed for the professional standards of the industry to be embedded throughout. I believe that this gave me a kickstart in the sector, as I was aware of the skills and attributes that employers from the industry were looking for. My knowledge of CIMSPA and understanding of what they do for the sports sector led me to gaining a role as a CIMSPA Youth Panel member when I finished university. I am still an active member on the panel and will continue this role for as long as I can. 

"As part of the degree, I completed my placement at Brighton Footgolf. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience as I was working first-hand within the industry and I am grateful for the skills the placement allowed me to develop. The placement process was a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills and to use as a talking point in interviews. I cannot fault this process offered by the university. I am very thankful for it, and it is a pleasure to now be a placement host for current students. 

"Since leaving university, I have worked for Active Kent and Medway and Skiltek Sport. Active Kent and Medway is an Active Partnership involved in facilitating sport and physical activity participation and it was great being able to go into a role I had lots of knowledge about and to see how an Active Partnership functions from day to day.

"Currently, I am a Sports Development Officer for a sports coaching company, Skiltek Sport. This role combines the administrative side of the industry with the practical side of delivering sports sessions for children and young people. Alongside my current role I also coach two girls football teams, Hastings United U9s and Sussex Schools U14s."
